JARDIM BOTÂNICO TROPICAL

The general goal was to safeguard the existing heritage whilst allowing for its enhancement and use, as it is inserted in a privileged touristic area of the city. Bearing in mind its sustainable continuity in the future, the restoration aimed to enhance the ‘living museum’ concept, that allows the study, identification and exhibition of plants from tropical and sub-tropical origins, contributing to the botanical species conservation; To promote the garden as a place to study the science of plants, and for knowledge production and dissemination, in cooperation with research and education institutions; To safeguard the existing botanical collections and to promote its enrichment within a coherent spatial logic; To reinforce the Tropical garden as a cultural and landscape entity within the heritage ensemble of Belém.

The project was organized in different stages focusing each on a different area of the garden. The first phase, completed in early 2020, included the Washingtonia’s Promenade, the several lakes and surrounding areas, the vegetation area along the Tropical Garden east limit, the formal garden at the Jewelry Patio, the Serpent’s Patio, the Cactus Garden, the Cold Greenhouse and the Western Promenade.
